Recovery Matters

Well, listeners, I am getting excited about the launch of Recovery Matters on November 4, 2010 on the VoiceAmerica Radio Network’s Health and Wellness Channel. To set the tone for the 13-week pilot run of the show, we will be discussing the very concept of recovery: what it is, and what it means to various people. Two very special guests will be helping me explore this issue, representing the professional perspective, and the perspective of the recovering individual.

Christina Delos Reyes, MD is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. She is Board-Certified in Adult Psychiatry and Addiction Psychiatry and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM). She is the Director of the Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship at University Hospitals of Cleveland and also teaches medical students and residents. Since 2000, she has served as the Medical Consultant to the Ohio SAMI CCOE (Substance Abuse and Mental Illness Coordinating Center of Excellence), a statewide training and technical assistance organization dedicated to evidence-based practices. In 2009, following a decade of work in community mental health, she was appointed as the Chief Clinical Officer of the Alcohol, Drug Addiction, and Mental Health Services Board of Cuyahoga County.

Christopher Kennedy Lawford is a New York Times Best-Selling Author, and outspoken advocate raising awareness on the public health issues of addiction and Hepatitis C. His memoir, Symptoms of Withdrawal (2005), chronicles his own, near fatal battle with drug addiction and recovery. Lawford, whose face you might recognize from his public service announcements on A&E, has now been in recovery for over 24 years. In 2009, his book Moments of Clarity, a collection of spiritual epiphanies experienced by those in recovery, also reached the New York Times Best Seller list. Lawford is also the co-author of Healing Hepatitis C.
